Association between exposure to wind turbines and sleep disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis

[Abstract] To date, there is scarce evidence on the association between sleep disorders and noise generated by wind turbines. We searched six relevant electronic databases from the inception to May 2023 for relevant articles. The methodological quality of the included articles was evaluated using the US National Institutes of Health tool. Fifteen articles met the inclusion criteria. The overall prevalence of sleep disorders among residents close to wind turbines was 34% (95% Confidence Interval, 0.22-0.47). Univariate meta-regressions for distance and . . .

Establishing the acute physiological and sleep disruption characteristics of wind farm versus road traffic noise disturbances in sleep: a randomized controlled trial protocol #AUS

Establishing the acute physiological and sleep disruption characteristics of wind farm versus road traffic noise disturbances in sleep: a randomized controlled trial protocol Introduction Wind farms continue to gain prominence as a major source of sustainable energy generation in over 90 countries. However, onshore wind farms are also a source of public concern and debate regarding potential adverse effects of wind farm noise (WFN) emissions on nearby communities. Sufficiently loud noise from any source has the potential to disturb sleep, . . .

Commercial wind turbines and residential home values: New evidence from the universe of land-based wind projects in the United States #USA

We examine the impact of proximity to land-based commercial wind turbines on residential home values in the United States using data from 2005 to 2020. Our results are primarily driven by wind projects located in urban counties with populations greater than 250,000. We find that homes located within 1.25 mile (2 km) of a commercial wind turbine experience on average approximately an 11% decline in value following the announcement of a new commercial wind energy project, relative to counterfactual homes located 3-5 miles . . .

How far are birds, bats, and terrestrial mammals displaced from onshore wind power development? A systematic review #FIN

Highlights 63 %, 72 %, and 67 % of bird, bat, and mammal cases respectively reported displacement. Cranes, owls and semi-domestic reindeer were displaced on average up to 5 km. Bats were displaced on average up to 1 km in 21 out of 29 cases. Findings of no displacement resulted from methodology, species, and environment. Information on displacement helps to mitigate the effects of wind power on wildlife. Abstract Wind power is a rapidly growing source of energy worldwide. It is crucial for climate change . . .

Gone with the wind? Wind farm–induced wakes and regulatory gaps #DNK #NOR

Abstract – Wind farm–induced wakes can propagate dozens of kilometres, decreasing the power production and the fatigue lifetime of wind turbines between neighbouring farms. This phenomenon termed hereinafter “wind theft”, may lead to legal conflicts between wind farm operators and even States as power production from a wind farm is affected by the wake effects generated by another, reducing power output. Wind theft can substantially slow down the development of offshore wind if it is not regulated by a clear legal . . .

An offshore wind turbine is set in a highly corrosive marine environment. Its base structure is completely immersed in the seawater. Conventional corrosion prevention methods use both a cathodic protection and a coating method to enhance corrosion protection to protect the structure. Cathodic corrosion protection is an electrochemical process applying the principles of electrochemical cells transforming a metal material into a cathode. There are two types of cathodic protection: “applied current cathodic protection” and “passive galvanic cathodic protection”. The development . . .

Seasonal patterns of bird and bat collision fatalities at wind turbines #USA

Abstract – Information on when birds and bats die from collisions with wind turbines can help refine efforts to minimize fatalities via curtailment of energy productions and can offer insight into the risk factors associated with collision fatalities. Using data pooled from 114 post-construction monitoring studies conducted at wind facilities across the United States, we described seasonal patterns of fatalities among birds and bats. Bat fatalities peaked in the fall. Silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans), a long-distance migrant, and Mexican free-tailed bat . . .

Environmental Impact Assessment of Sacrificial Anode Method in Taiwan Strait #TWN

The development . . .

Projected cross-shore changes in upwelling induced by offshore wind farm development along the California coast #CA

[Abstract] In California offshore waters, sustained northwesterly winds have been identified as a key resource that can contribute substantially to renewable energy goals. However, the development of large-scale offshore wind farms can reduce the wind stress at the sea surface, which could affect wind-driven upwelling, nutrient delivery, and ecosystem dynamics. Here we examine changes to upwelling using atmospheric and ocean circulation numerical models together with a hypothetical upper bound buildout scenario of 877 turbines spread across three areas of interest. . . .

Wind farm and solar park effects on plant–soil carbon cycling: uncertain impacts of changes in ground-level microclimate

Abstract – Global energy demand is increasing as greenhouse gas driven climate change progresses, making renewable energy sources critical to future sustainable power provision. Land-based wind and solar electricity generation technologies are rapidly expanding, yet our understanding of their operational effects on biological carbon cycling in hosting ecosystems is limited. Wind turbines and photovoltaic panels can significantly change local ground-level climate by a magnitude that could affect the fundamental plant–soil processes that govern carbon dynamics. Estimating habitat loss due to wind turbine avoidance by bats: Implications for European siting guidance #FRA

Abstract – Wind energy is rapidly growing as a renewable source of energy but is not neutral for wildlife, especially bats. Whereas most studies have focused on bat mortality through collision, very few have quantified the loss of habitat use resulting from the potential negative impact of wind turbines, and none of them for hub heights higher than 55 m. Such impacts could durably affect populations, creating a need for improvement of knowledge to integrate this concern in implementation strategies. We quantified . . .

Vibrational noise from wind energy turbines negatively impacts earthworm abundance #NLD

[abstract] Human activities often impact the sensory environment of organisms. Wind energy turbines are a fast-growing potential source of anthropogenic vibrational noise that can affect soil animals sensitive to vibrations and thereby alter soil community functioning. Larger soil animals, such as earthworms (macrofauna, > 1 cm in size), are particularly likely to be impacted by the low-frequency turbine waves that can travel through soils over large distances. Here we examine the effect of wind turbine-induced vibrational noise on the abundance of soil . . .

“We have been invaded”: Wind energy sacrifice zones in Åfjord Municipality and their implications for Norway

ABSTRACT. Following the “green” growth tradition, the construction of lower carbon energy (renewable energy) infrastructures, such as wind power, has gained prominence in Norway. This has led to indigenous Saami herders confronting pastureland dispossession, some citizens fearing the industrialization of nature, and municipal councils losing formal governance power in favor of national agencies and private-sector project developers—justified by the urgency of the climate crisis. Steven Nowakowski of Rainforest Reserves Australia collected 2022 5-minute output data for the 180-MW Mount Emerald wind energy facility in Queensland, Australia. The average output was 26.8% of capacity - generating at or above that rate of 48.3 MW only 40% of the time. The median output was 18.1% of capacity (meaning that half the time it was generating less than 32.6 MW.

Silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans), a long-distance migrant, and Mexican free-tailed bat . . .

Wind Power: A Lawyer’s Guide to Representing Landowners

Wind power is a clean and increasingly cost-competitive source of electric energy. With policy makers and the public at large demanding cleaner alternatives to fossil energy, the construction of wind turbines has increased in recent years. With this trend expected to continue, many landowners—particularly those who own agricultural land—may have the opportunity to grant developers limited access to their property to construct wind turbines. There are numerous legal considerations regarding the siting, permitting, construction, and operation of a wind power . . .

The extent of windfarm infrastructures on recognised European blanket bogs #EUR #GBR

Abstract. Peatland environments are the Earth’s largest terrestrial carbon store and have the potential to act as carbon sinks. However, the development of windfarms on peatlands is affecting their morphology, hydrology, ground-level climate conditions, carbon functions and vegetation, and long-term consequences still need to be assessed. Blanket bogs are a rare type of ombrotrophic peatland that are typical of oceanic areas with high precipitation and low temperatures. Their distribution has been mapped across Europe, where they are mainly located on . . .

Long-term quantification and characterisation of wind farm noise amplitude modulation

[Abstract] The large-scale expansion of wind farms has prompted community debate regarding adverse impacts of wind farm noise (WFN). One of the most annoying and potentially sleep disturbing components of WFN is amplitude modulation (AM). Here we quantified and characterised AM over one year using acoustical and meteorological data measured at three locations near three wind farms. We found that the diurnal variation of outdoor AM prevalence was substantial, whereby the nighttime prevalence was approximately 2 to 5 times higher . . .

Interaction Between Resource Species and Electromagnetic Fields Associated with Electricity Production by Offshore Wind Farms

ABSTRACT. As offshore wind energy production increases, the number of subsea cables will proliferate along with associated electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions. Understanding how EMF interactions (a potential pressure) affect resource species (receptor) requires an improved knowledge base to aid management decisions. Within the framework of a potential effect on a receptor, we review key aspects of assessing EMF exposure. From the vantage point of the receptor species, we consider how their perception of EMF varies through time as a consequence . . .
